SUMMARY:Bartow History Museum: Atco\, From Paternalism to the Pursuit of Happiness
DESCRIPTION:Atco Families:\n\nFrom Paternalism to the Pursuit of Happiness\nOn Wednesday\, March 19\, 2014 at noon\, Yvonne Mashburn Schmidt\, historian and Atco native\, will discuss "Atco Families: From Paternalism to the Pursuit of Happiness".\n\n\n\nAfter the Civil War\, cotton production increased\, but profits decreased\, because investors began investing in manufacturing rather than land. The challenge for cotton producers was to change the economics of their business. Their strategy was to create textile mills to make cotton production more efficient\, and the idea of mill villages was born to provide a stable work force. This stability was founded in an imperfect management style called paternalism. Cartersville's own American Textile Company (ATCO) was also built on this strategy. Despite difficult experiences\, later generations\, some who are descendants of these same founding families\, remember and celebrate fond memories of and an unparalleled love for the same village.\n\n\n\nThis Lunch and Learn will take place at the Bartow History Museum located at 4 E. Church Street in downtown Cartersville. Parking is available next to the building. The lecture is free to members and included with the price of admission for not-yet members. Guests are invited to bring a lunch beginning at 11:45 a.m.\, and the program will begin at noon. For more information on this and other BHM programs\, call 770-382-3818\, ext. 6288 or visit our website at www.bartowhistorymuseum.org.
