About the Speaker:
Roy Barnes was born in Mableton, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1969 and a law degree in 1972. After serving in the Cobb District Attorney's office for two years, he was elected to the first of eight terms in the state senate. Barnes served as administration floor leader from 1982 through 1989. Returning to the legislature in 1993 after a run for governor in 1990, he represented the 33rd house district. Roy Barnes served as the 80th Governor of Georgia from 1999 to 2003.
