The Bartow History Museum welcomes Yvonne Mashburn Schmidt, Certified Genealogist®, to its Lunch and Learn series on April 18th at noon. Schmidt will answer the question: What is Genetic Genealogy? She will also address what tests to order to help answer research questions and explain how Genetic Genealogy can be used to advance family research efforts and help prove kinships. The lecture is free to museum members and included with the price of admission for not-yet-members. About the Speaker
Yvonne is a native Georgian and was raised in Bartow County, Georgia. She grew up, married, and moved to Vidalia Georgia, for 32 years before returning to Bartow County in 2007. Many of her ancestral lineages stem from families who settled in early Georgia. Her interest in genealogy began in 1967 as a twelve-year-old after her father died. She began recording names of her family in the Family Bible. In 1975 after the death of her mother, she approached her maternal grandmother to ask more about her family and was told she did not need to know the names of her great grandparents. After retiring as a property and casualty insurance agency owner, Yvonne decided to pursue a more serious genealogical education and enrolled and graduated from Boston University's Genealogical Research program in 2013. After almost 4 years of preparation, she applied for Certification with the Board for Certification of Genealogists. In 2016, she became one of five active genealogists who have earned and currently hold the Certified Genealogist® credential in the state of Georgia. She is a past LDS Family History Center Director that served a multi-county area in NW Georgia. She specializes in Georgia records, African American and Native American families with Georgian ancestors, and Genetic Genealogy. Her work has been published in the Georgia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Georgia Backroads Magazine, The Appalachian, and she has authored a book review for the National Genealogical Society Quarterly. She mentors DNA study groups and currently is a contractor with the U.S. Army Past Conflicts Repatriations Branch. In this capacity, she works to identify next of kin and DNA-eligible family members for soldiers who remain unaccounted for in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. Yvonne's DNA journey has helped unravel the puzzling answer her grandmother provided as a response to her 1975 question about her ancestry. Take care what you tell your children about their ancestry.
