Exploring the Myths to Discover the Realities of the Removal

Walter Knapp, Vice President of Georgia Trail of Tears Association, will speak on the Cherokee Removal in the presentation, entitled “Exploring the Myths to Discover the Realities of the Removal”, Thursday June 28th at 7 p.m. at the Bartow History Museum. According to Knapp, “There are five basic misconceptions or myths about the Removal”, which he will share during the presentation. He will also review seven court decisions, both federal and state, and discuss the impact of each on the actual removal. The impact of state decisions was the key to removal. The lecture is free for members and included in the price of admission to the museum for non-members.

About the Speaker
Walter Knapp, a veteran of the United States Navy, graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, with a degree in history. He has concentrated his research on Native American studies for almost three decades. Recently, he was an instructor of Native American History and Culture at The University of North Georgia continuing education department. He is currently Vice President of the Georgia Trail of Tears Association. After twenty years in the world of banking and finance, he expanded his interests to include freelance writing. Walter has written two novels, A Ranger’s Revenge which explores actual 19th-century events and their effect on Native American culture, and Through The Eyes of an Assassin, a modern day thriller with a Native American protagonist. In addition, he has written numerous magazine articles covering aviation and aviation related topics. Walter also enjoys reading, horseback riding, hiking and camping in his spare time.
